I was in AVEL South Mar-67 May-68. (35L20) Initially went to 1st platoon AESCS in Vung Tau but ended up shortly in 2nd Plt at Tan Son Nhut. We went to Long Than (N) in late Feb or early March 68. We were under the 765th Trans Battalion 34th GS Gp. The 3rd plt was in Vinh Long, I believe. We were billeted with the 56th Trans in Tan Son Nhut, but were not attached to them. I think the 56th did have it's own helicopters. Our CO Capt., then Major Babel was a pilot and flew Hueys.
Take care all

I came to Viet Nam on Nov 28, 1964 as part of the 8th Sig. Det. We joined with the 69th & 255th dets. We were under HHC 145th Avn.Bn. With only 7 months left I was short when I got there. But in June of 65 I re-uped & extended my tour 3 times. In early 66 we were transfored to the 765th Trans Bn. I came back in 68 with LSI. with the 56th trans.
In 1970 I was state side & was in the proscess of re-uping agian but was in a auto accident. I became slightly disabled. That stopped me from getting back to Nam.

Jack attached is a link to a picture my Dad took of the airfield in Vung Tau I believe. Would these slicks all be from different Units-not South?

There were no helicopter units in Avel South. Avel South was an avionics company in the 34th General Support Group. I believe it came under the command of the 765th Transportation Bn but I am not positive about that.

Frank,
I was with the 71st Assault Helicopter Company Chu Lai 1971 . Stood down and turned it over to the ARVN Air Force and I went south down to Avel Central. Register as a non-avel personnel and book your room send Russ Mason your registration fee and come to the Reunion this August. Like Jack said you will have a great time. Colorado Springs will be beautiful this August and we have a good turnout so far.

AVEL Far North was attached to Americal, somehow. We even had one guy in another division (USARVN), attached to Americal for rations, attached to AVEL for duty. AVEL carried M14's, Americal carried M16's. the 335th Trans was a kludge of several operations, I think. Anything extra ended there.

Jack, love this picture on the website of all of us after the ceremony at the wall. I have shown this to co-workers who said this really was an emotional picture and really touched them. It touches me and I am so proud to be a part of the Avel Reunions. Be Avel Strong and be proud of our strong bonds. Come to the Avel Reunions when you can. Contribute to the blogs on the website and know that we are all brothers and will be so from our experiences and we are welcome to any feedback from all of our fellow Veterans.
Hope to see all you in Colorado Springs this August
