Thanks Dennis and Mike for the reminder. That was an incredible day and the wreath laying ceremony and the whole Reunion went off so well despite the Governments attempt to sidetrack everything with the shutdown. Dennis, for me the last few years planning the Avel Reunions with Jack and Russ has been just an incredible sense of pride and accomplishment and to see every one in attendance enjoy themselves and see so much comradery it makes everything worthwhile. Dennis and Mike I hope to see both of you in Charleston next year. We already have some special events planned.

What a ceremony it was joined by my old and new friends. As Dennis said it is hard to believe it has been a year already.

Just happened to notice the date today. It was exactly one year ago in Washington DC that we stood together as brothers and had that incredible ceremony at the Wall. Seeing the Wall for the first time was very emotional for me and I was very glad to share those moments with my fellow brothers. I'm glad I attended that reunion, seeing more guys that I have not seen for over 40 years and meeting new guys that were there before us and at different sites. Thanks, Jack, Russ and Jerry for all the hard work you guys do in planning these reunions!

I went to the Phu Loi PX and went through their pre-recorded reel to reel tapes and found the latest John Lennon music with the Plastic Ono Band. I was so excited when I bought it and then when I went to play it a few days later found out that it was Yoko Ono's music. The art work was almost identical and I was pissed. As much as I loved John Lennon I don't know that I forgave him for that. Can't remember but I'm thinking that I just tossed that tape in the garbage. Should have used an incendiary grenade on it.

My roommate Rodney had some LP's and two of my favorites he played were Carol King (Tapestry) and America. Like Jack, I liked Horse With No Name. By the way, America is playing here tonite so the radio station I listen to is playing a lot of their songs. Can't believe they are still on tour, I believe they still have two of the orginal guys. But one of my old time favorite songs is Heat Wave by Martha and the Vendellas. I think they used that song on the opening scenes of American Graffitti 2 when they showed the Hueys flying in Vietnam. Wow, such good memories!

Hmmm lots of memories there. Like "Billy Joe McCalliser jumped of the Talahachi Bridge" now that was morale boosting! But, what really sticks in my mind was one nite, working late, the guy on the radio said he had a song by the group "Strawberry Alarm Clock" this was like April '67 I remember my buddy Karl saying what the h*** is that?! Like it was a whole 'nother planet back home. Also now, 'fess up how many of you guys tried drying bannana peels on the tent roof after hearing "The Electrical Banana" or some such? Just sayin'

"Knock Three Times" by Tony Orlando & Dawn, is the song that brings me back to Viet Nam - I hate that song so mch!

The first song I think of is the first or at least one of the very first songs playing on the plane's intercom as I was leaving Vietnam in late March 1968.
We were still climbing steeply away from Bien Hoa when I heard Lulu's, "To Sir With Love", and that memory stuck in my mind forever.

Other than that, Scott McKenzie's "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" was definitely a song everyone seemed to like because we were all dreaming of heading home, back thru San Francisco.

After Tet we moved out of Tan Son Nhut to Long Thanh, and The Beatle's "Hello, Goodbye" always reminds me of the dust and heat and dryness of Long Thanh during that part of the year (late Feb. to mid March of '68).

Those 3 stand out, but there are others.

Hmm, Leaving On A Jet Plane I associate with leaving home for Vietnam. The Animals of course - We Gotta Get Out Of This Place. Jimi Hendrix(Purple Haze), Simon and Garfunkle (Sounds Of Silence) and James Taylor (Fire and Rain) with my flying days. America (Horse With No Name) and Chicago (Saturday In The Park) with my end of tour time in Vung Tau with the 388th.

Of course nothing brings it all back like the sound of a Huey flying over.

We have done this before on the Avel Blog but just recently had some interchange between some of the Reunion Committee Members and started a dialogue about the music and how it affected you in Vietnam. I remember so many songs that remind me of Vietnam. American Pie, Don McClean, Heart of Gold, Neil Young. Of course there is Gotta get out of this place, the Animals, Peter, Paul and Marys, Leaving on a Jet Plane. Give us your memories of songs that bring you back to your time in Vietnam. Captain Avel if you are still out there would like to hear from you also. I know everybody can remember songs that bring them back to the time they were in Vietnam please share them with us.
