Do you remember Thanksgiving in 1970? The 605th mess hall was issued 50-60 turkeys and I found out that only 30 were being prepared....'Never did find out what was going to happen to the rest but one the AVEL soldiers on KP got word to me and I had a talk with Major Collins. We ended up with plenty of turkey. That was the year that I discovered WILD TURKEY..Cost $1.50 per bottle and at 110 proof it very effective. I hope all of our AVEL soldiers have a GREAT Thanksgiving and I'll have a shot of wild turkey to honor all of you at 1:00 PM thursday.....

I brought a case of ba moi ba to the Reunion last year in Charleston. It was much better than I had remembered it. Tried to find some in Las Vegas but could not. Maybe I can bring some for next year's Reunion in Washington, DC.

I want to wish all my fellow Vietnam veterans a happy Veterans Day. Thank you all for your service.

Bah-Mui-Bah.......3x10+3=33 is Vietnamese for a poorly made French beer. We used to say that it had a formildehide base instead of a malt base.....Maybe so, it sure tasted shitty.......warm or hot.......

A bunch of us went to Verdun France from Germany on Veterans Day [to meet the girls] in the mid '70's and brought a case back to share with newbees.. It was sorry then, sorry before and if they still make it SORRY STILL!

Germany makes good-tasting beer....France makes good-looking women......America makes men that appreciate both!

Russ Overheu posted an identification on one of the Avel photos. His name "bombdebomb33" prompted some discussion on that wonderful "33" Beer. I will post the train of emails. The first was from james Johnson:

I recall #33 and how bad it was, unless it was all you had then it wasn't that bad. Even warm.

Lt. Avel (Soon to be Captain) I was with the 71st Assault Helicopter Company in Chu Lai before Avel Central and every time I went to the mess hall it would be the time the Mamasan's decided it was time to burn the Latrine offerings. Already quesy about having to eat the mess hall food and then having to smell burning diesel fuel and human feces on the way did not make for a wonderful dining experience. Luckily Chu Lai had many power outages and we got to eat C-Rations. Asked for C-Ration pound cake and peaches at the Reunion Banquet but wasn't meant to be. By the way what has happened to Lt. Dan??

Jack, it's funny that you asked about songs. A week after our reunion, I went to a Fifties/Sixties Oldies Bash with some of my high school classmates. We had a blast, reliving memories from high school and remembering old friends. As soon as I hear "Heat Wave", it immediately took me back to the previous week in Las Vegas, where I had a even better time. So, on back to back weekends, I had a chance to meet old friends, make new friends and relive some of the best years of my life. Does this get any better or what?

Music is a great memory invoker...that is a word, isn't it?...almost as much as the sense of smell. I remember Adrian Cronauer coming on every morning and after his usual long good morning, seems like the first song he played was Hooked On a Feeling by B.J. Thomas...seems like we were putting on our flac jackets and steel pots and web gear and grabbing the weapon (the one for killing) and leaving the building as the LSI guys were filing in every time I heard that song. You want a REAL trip down memory lane, go get you a bucket of human POOP and dump diesel fuel on it and light-er-up! Makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck every time I do that. GREAT!!!

Dennis, Horse With No Name is a big one with me too. The first time I heard it I was flying door gunner and listening to AFVN on the head set and it came on as we were banking to land in Vung Tau. And Bridge Over Troubled Waters was a big one too. I broke my foot in basic training and wound up in the orthopedic ward at Ft. Campbell. Everyone else in the ward was a wounded Nam vet. These guys were all messed up. That was the first time I heard that song. Never forget it.

My roommate Rodney (the other guy from Hawaii) had a turntable and played some of his albums (33's I believe, no CD's back then). I got hooked on Carol King's Tapestry and America (Horse With No Name). But the one song that I identify with most is "Heat Wave" by Martha and the Vandellas.

Me and MAGIC CARPET RIDE by Steppenwolf arrived in Vietnam at the same time. I remember dancing in the shop...did we have alcohol in those days?....to that song, and still go right back to the shop every time I hear it...like hearing a Huey. So many others too...Glen Campbell Lineman for the County...FIRE..(don't know who sang that one)...B.J. Thomas Hooked On a Feeling....Joe South, Games People Play...Born To Be Wild, Steppenwolf....Mony Mony, Tommy James....Touch Me, The Doors....Dock of the Bay, Otis Redding....Oops, that's more than one.

Sorry about the mix up on the 2011 reunion site. I was in Charleston for that one. I was thinking of another trip I had made to Savanagh. You know what happens when you get old.

Just a few comments I want to make. First I am still saddened by the loss of Dennis Cole. Met him for the first time last year in Charleston. Such a geniune person and all around great guy. He will be sorely missed.

Two, we have had some really good blogs about the Reunion but would like to see many more. Come on everyone that came to Las Vegas tell us what you though of the Reunion.

Third,

Fortunate son-Creedence Clearwater Revival
We got to get out of this place-Eric Burdon and the Animals
